weekend update

this weekend was relaxing, as usual. with more visitors on the way, we are saving up our hard-core exploring for the guests. nothing like turning them into guinea pigs (ahem, le phoenicien). i think my mom will bear the brunt of experimentation, as i don't want to subject my pregnant cousin to anything horrendous. sorry, mom!

we flew down to dubai (in the car, not in the air) in way under an hour. friday morning is usually a good time to go, not to mention the fact that trucks are now banned from using our street. hallelujah - less noise and much less traffic.

we hit up festival city again because we needed to go to ace hardware, hyper panda and ikea. while in the food court (we went for iranian food again - YUM - mainly because the crazy guy was nowhere in sight. did he go postal? we didn't hear about a killing rampage, so i'm guessing maybe he just had a hard-earned day off.) there was a table of young women who were going CRAZY over julian. he was in excellent form - waving when they asked, giving them hugs, etc. he could be the mayor, if they had those here.

once we returned to RAK, we spent a bit of the afternoon at the beach, where the band at the beach bar had a guest italian singer. he was quite hilarious, actually. sang some good songs (eros ramazzotti, natch and "gloria" - the italian version, which i think is the original) and made some funny commentary. julian, on the other hand, was interacting with a russian (?) child and family, chasing after the older boy and pouring sand on the younger one (who was probably 3 years old). he just loves being at the beach and with other children.

on saturday, we really just stayed local - running errands at manar/carrefour and organizing the apartment. we were invited to dinner on saturday night by neneth, as her son in the philippines was first in his class. we went with her and lewellyn to 'shalimar', one of the typical indian/chinese/arabic/continental restaurants. it was much better than 'moon light'. some highlights included chili beef, grilled fish and fresh mango juice. serge wanted chicken tikka - it was good, but REALLY spicy. from there, we went for a quick walk at the corniche, but julian couldn't hold out, so we headed home (and caught the horribly boring results show of american idol.
