moon light

i know it's not two words, but according to the owners of that restaurant here, it is. we were looking for some sketchy places to eat on saturday and came across moon light restaurant. why sketchy, you ask? why not. there are tons of them and i say they need to be explored. sometimes the oddest sort of places turn out to have the best food.

sadly, i cannot say that of moon light, although it wasn't bad. we were put in a side room (a "family" room) as is the custom, also because i was the only woman in the place. nice to be out of the eyesight of the male patrons, although i think they were staring (on our way out and in) because i'm glow-in-the-dark white (firstly) and a woman not wearing a veil (second). the menu was the usual smorgasbord of arabic, indian and chinese food, which sounds random, but is more common than you'd think here. we decided not to go for the completely mysterious dishes, although we did get the "moon light special salad", which consisted of cucumbers, tomatoes, chicken, mini shrimp and lettuce drowning in a heavy mayonnaise-based dressing. and i should perhaps clarify that it was all a bit mysterious (you never REALLY know what you're getting), but we steered clear of the dishes whose names were truly unknown - i seem to recall something by the name of "kangmoose" or something.

aside from the salad, the food was okay. i had mixed noodles (ramen-type noodles with veg, chicken and shrimp - clearly the blue light special ingredients) and serge had ginger chicken, which was indian-style chinese food. again, wasn't bad, but wasn't fall on the floor amazing. reminds me of something serge told me he heard from someone who has been living here for a while:

"i can tell you where you shouldn't eat, but i can't tell you honestly where you should go."

well, isn't that lovely?!?! i think we've found some good places, and i'm going to ask my new network of friends what they recommend. we're going to find out as much as we can, and when we do, maybe i should write a mini guide to this city so that people actually can find out some information!
