yesterday (friday), we went to the beach, it was a beautiful day.
today, the weather was pretty hazy, so the beach was not a great option, so we decided instead to check out a thai/japanese restaurant on the corniche called "asiana". not only was everyone who worked there thai, but the cooks as well. that is a hard thing to find around here.
the food was awesome. we had a plate of shrimp-filled appetizers and som tam (green papaya salad). even julian couldn't help himself and was picking at the salad and at the apps (thankfully, he's not allergic to shrimp, although it was the first time for him trying). then, julian had chicken ton katsu (the japanese breaded chix) and ate like a champ. i had jasmine rice and chicken pad kaprow (w/ chili and basil). serge had pad thai. we followed with mango and sticky rice and a chat with the chefs, one of whom is an expert in buddha images.
i happened to be wearing my buddhist amulet that was given to me by my aunt nancy. i think her friend made the necklace, and possibly didn't even know what it represented. apparently, it's a very rare image and on a unique stone. they basically told me if i wanted to sell it, i could get a lot of money for it. how interesting! but, it is also an image that is usually worn by men. the stones that make up the chain of the necklace, however, are not very masculine.
we ended up hitting the beach in the afternoon anyway, but julian just played in the sand. after about 100 trips down the slide in the playground, we headed home to hang out and relax.
moral of the story? i think we've found the best restaurant in RAK!
