last month i realized that my driver license is up for renewal. my sister melissa mailed me the documents so that i could DHL everything back in time for the 3/31/09 expiration and get a temporary license until i come back to the states to get the new one.
$50, reams of paper (for the photocopies of the countless documents you need to prove your identity, your status, blah blah blah) and weeks later, i got my letter back from the DMV. they didn't give me a temp - i was missing something. somehow, i was supposed to have provided the boating certificate (which i don't have) to get the boat part of the license on there. (mind you, this was written nowhere on the 75 pages of instructions they provide.)
instead of something thinking, "hmm, her license expires on 3/31, she's out of the country, maybe i'll just give a temp for the auto and she can deal with the boat part when she comes back." that would require common sense which is obviously not a requirement for becoming employed with the state of new jersey.
so now we'll see what happens when i have to get my UAE license. more lovely stuff to have to worry about!
